Chair – 2016 Bobby Orr Hall of Fame Celebrates Youth
The Bobby Orr Hall of Fame was saddened to learn of the recent passing of Les Tabobondung. Les passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, March 24th, 2016 at the age of 78 years. He was inducted in 2015 during our Twelfth Annual Bobby Orr Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for his athletic and coaching achievements.
Our sincere condolences to all of his family and friends.
The Bobby Orr Hall of Fame is pleased to announce that plans are underway to recognize the contribution of our youth to Sport in the West Parry Sound Area. In an event planned for May 28th, 2016, Bobby Orr will host an evening to recognize the young leaders in Athletics and Active Living in our area.
Over the years, Bobby Orr Hall of Fame staff and volunteers have heard requests from the community that the Hall of Fame find a way to recognize our local youth and future leaders. At each annual Induction, there is an award to recognize the ‘Top Defenseman’. Mr. Orr, staff and volunteers see an opportunity to build on this; as such, we will not be hosting the 2016 Induction, but will be dedicating our efforts and focus on delivering on the goal of Celebrating Youth. Nominations to the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame will continue to be accepted for future Induction Ceremonies.
While plans are still underway, our community can expect to be requested to look at all local sports and the leaders and achievers and be prepared to submit nominations on those who should be recognized. More details on the event will be posted on the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame website in the near future.
We look forward to hosting an evening dedicated to recognizing youth in our area.

The Bobby Orr Hall of Fame Induction committee is pleased to announce the 2015 Inductees. This year’s event will be held on Saturday May 23rd where the following inductees will be honoured.
L to R: Ivan Nicksy (1956-57 Shamrocks), Bob Groskorth (1956-57 Shamrocks), Les Tabobondung (Inductee & 1956-57 Shamrocks), Carole McDonald (Representing Wilfred ‘Bucko’ McDonald), Clyde York (1956-57 Shamrocks), Ernie Eves (Inductee)
Les is an icon in the hockey community in Parry Sound and Wasauksing First Nation. From the age of 12 years old Les could always be found on the ice. His skills quickly attracted the attention of hockey scouts resulting in invitations for tryouts for NHL farm teams including the Hamilton Red Wings and St. Catharines Teepees Junior A team, as well as tryouts with NHL team the Chicago Blackhawks. His contribution to sport in the Parry Sound Area continued well beyond hockey and included coaching community minor hockey and softball. Les coached the Parry Island Women’s Fastball team to several championships and was a great support, teacher and motivation to his son and Bobby Orr Hall of Fame Inductee (2003) the late Barry ‘Hawk’ Tabobondung. For all of this we welcome Les as a 2015 Inductee.
Category: Honourary Member
Ernie Eves was Ontario’s 23rd Premier. He represented Parry Sound in the Ontario Legislature for some 20 years and served as Minister of Finance, Deputy Premier and Government House Leader as well as holding other portfolios. That being said, the Ernie that is being presented as an Honoured Member of the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame, is the Ernie who came to Parry Sound in his teenage years, raised a family here and worked with various levels of government to secure Northern Status that, to this day, delivers benefits that are much needed in Parry Sound. Ernie is responsible for the Highway 400 being expanded to four lanes to Parry Sound. His work to help secure funding to build a new Health Centre is recognizable when you drive up ‘Ernie Eves Way’ as you approach the building. Without Ernie’s support the funding to execute upon the dream of a Performing Arts Centre and a Hall of Fame to celebrate our Hometown Icon, may never have happened. Our Induction in 2015 will give us an opportunity to say thank you again to Ernie Eves as he is inducted into the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame as an Honoured Member.
Wilfred ‘Bucko’ McDonald
Wilfred Kennedy “Bucko” McDonald was a Canadian professional hockey and
lacrosse player, coach, and politician. Born in Fergus, Ontario, he played for the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and New York Rangers. He won 3 Stanley Cups in his career, in 1936 and 1937 with Detroit and in 1942 with Toronto. Bucko’s contribution to sport in Parry Sound is legendary, both through his coaching support and his mentorship to Bobby Orr. Bucko passed away in 1991 but not without leaving behind a legacy that has been recognized by many and will further be recognized through his Induction into the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame.
1956-57 Junior ‘C’ Shamrocks
This team of 10 local boys and 9 “imports” left their mark by becoming Parry Sound’s first team to win a Provincial championship. Their exemplary record during their regular season, while playing an exhibition schedule against teams at a much higher level, earned them a spot in the Junior “C” championship race. These boys played hard,
eliminating many of their competitors in three straight games, and came out victorious in game seven of the finals to bring home Parry Sound’s first Ontario Hockey Association Championship.
Clarence Vowels, Marcel Plouffe, Gil Marks, Alfred Trotta, Ivan Nicksy, Bob Groskorth, Denton Vowels, Terry McPherson, Clyde York, Les Tabobondung, Dan Guistini, Ron Kearns, Pete Cummings, Ken Boyd, Barry Purdon, Dave Newton, Ron Harris, Bob Calder & honorary team member Alan Hancock. Coach: Mike Kolisnek.
